Executive Summary #2

On Monday, September 19 at 5 p.m., we had a career building workshop with Joyce Henderson from UD’s Student Success Center. Joyce taught us how to land an internship through “30 second spot pitches.” Her goal was to get members to exude confidence in interviews by flexing our hard and soft skills. Our next meeting will be held virtually on Monday, September 26 at 5 p.m.

Executive Summary #1

On Monday, September 12, 2022, we had our first general meeting of the Fall semester. We were joined by a guest speaker, Emily Whelehan. Emily is a PR Manager at Oatly and sheds light on her experiences in agency versus in-house work. Because she graduated from UD in 2017, she gave her best advice to students who are looking to enter the public relations field. This meeting was held virtually. Our next meeting will be held on Monday, September 19, at 5 p.m. in Alison Hall 318.

SPRING 2022 SEMESTER

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY #5

On Monday, April 25th we had our fourth general meeting of the semester online. We were joined by Rob Moran, the Director of Corporate Communications for Mercedez-Benz USA for an enlightening discussion about their PR strategies and his career path after college to now. Next Monday, we will be hosting our second “Craft a Campaign” event in-person for planning a campaign around Nike Air Force 1’s 40th anniversary. 

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY #4

On Monday, March 21st we had our first skill slam of the Spring semester, in-person. Our Director of Internal Professional Development, Mackenzie Meyers, led a discussion about workplace etiquette. She taught members about do’s and don’ts of the workplace as well as skills and approaches to conflict resolution in the office, and how to best present yourself in virtual settings.

On Monday, March 14th we held out third general meeting of the spring semester virtually. We were joined by Lauren Steinhorn, a Senior Vice President at Edelman. Lauren spoke to us about her experience working in an agency versus in-house settings, pitching to brands we all know and love, and how she led her client to creatively respond to a surprise SNL skit. 

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY #2

On Monday, February 28th, we had our second in-person general meeting of the spring semester. Our speaker was Kelsey Kushner, a 2x Emmy award-winning Anchor and Reporter for WJZ CBS News. Kelsey taught us about her experience in reporting breaking news stories, her transition from college to working for the media full time, and gave us helpful networking tips.  Our next general meeting will be held virtually on Monday, March 14th with Lauren Steinhorn, Senior Vice President at Edelman.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY #1

On Monday, February 14th we held our first general meeting of the Spring semester. We were joined by a guest speaker, Kathleen Wood. Kathleen is the Community Partnership Manager at Delaware Hospice, Inc. She taught us about her experience as to shed hospice in a positive light rather than negative, and how she gains meaningful connections for her company. This event was held in person in Alison Hall room 132, our new meeting room. Our next general meeting will be Monday, February 28th at 5:00p.m.

FALL 2021 SEMESTER

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY #5

On November 29, 2021 we had our final general meeting of the Fall 2021 semester. We were joined by Chereese Jervis-Hill, the CEO of Events to Remember and CEO of Public Relations to Remember. Chereese taught us about the differences and similarities between Event Planning and Public Relations. We send good luck to all PRSSA members on finals!

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY #4

On November 15, 2021, we had our fourth general meeting of the Fall 2021 semester. We were joined by Meghan O’Donnel, the Communications Coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles. She taught us about her role with the Eagles’ Autism Foundation, and some past initiatives that she was part of, as well as some insight into the sports public relations world. Our next general meeting will be on Monday, November 29 at 5:00PM.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY #3

On Monday, October 4, we had our first in-person general meeting of the fall semester. Our speaker was Erin Allsman, the Executive Vice President and Managing Director at Brownstein Group in Philadelphia. Erin taught us about her experience from studying English to her interest in public relations, what it is like working for an advertising and public relations agency, the differences between advertising and public relations, and the importance of writing a good pitch. Our next general meeting will be Monday, October 25 at 5:00. 

SKILL SLAM: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY #2

On Monday, September 20, we had our first skill slam of the semester hosted by our Director of Internal Professional Development, Mackenzie Meyers. She taught us everything professional development including: resume tips, cover letter writing, and LinkedIn networking. Going forward, skill slams are for dues-paying members only, so be sure to pay your dues as soon as possible. In addition, if you are interested in applying for Public PRactice, be sure to email your resume to msmeryers@udel.edu

On Monday, October 4th, we will be holding our second general meeting of the fall open to everyone.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY #1

On Monday, September 13, we had our first general meeting of the semester with Emily Hamel. Emily is the VP of Events and Experiences at the Yankees. She taught us about her transition from studying Elementary Education to her interest in events, as well as programming and branding for the Yankee stadium. Emily gave us lots of insight into the sport and event planning industry! Thank you to all 111 attendees!

On Monday, September 20th, we will be holding our first skill slam of the semester that is open to all members at 5pm in McDowell Hall 112.  Our VP of Professional Development, Mackenzie Meyers, will be teaching us all about a topic that is TBA! Skill slams are usually for dues-paying members only, so be sure to pay your dues as soon as possible. 

SPRING 2021 SEMESTER

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY #4

On Monday, May 3rd we had our final general meeting of the semester with Kelli Orihuela. Kelli is the Communication Coordinator at Hermes, specializing in all things beauty. She taught us about her experience with internships during and after her time at the University of Delaware, as well as gave us insight on the fashion and beauty industry. 

On Monday, May 10th we will be holding two events for dues paying members. At 1:00 we will be having a virtual field trip of HUNTER PR, and agency in NYC. Following that, at 5:00 we will be having our final skill slam of the semester held by our VP of Professional Development, Mackenzie Meyers.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY #3

We had our third general meeting of the spring semester on Monday, April 12th with our amazing guest speaker, Stuart Schorr. Stuart is the VP of Marketing & Communications at Jaguar Land Rover North America. Stuart  taught us everything from brand partnerships and events to crisis communications. This was great for all 35 attendees to learn from.

Our next meeting will be our diversity panel hosted by Lia Hyman on Monday, April 16th and 5pm. The following Wednesday we will be having a special event for creating visions boards at 5pm for dues-paying members only.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY #2

We had our second general meeting of the Spring 2021 semester on Monday, March 1st with our amazing guest speaker, Paxton Mittleman. Paxton is a Senior Associate at Mission North and she took us through her journey from a UD grad to where she is now, and gave us tips and advice for how to stand out online during the pandemic! All 39 attendees were in for a treat!

Our next meeting is Monday, March 8 at 5pm. This is for dues-paying members only, and we will be having a viewing party of “the Pitch” and have a Q and A following! Bill is now a professor at UD for the Master’s program in Strategic Communication!  Bill taught us everything from his career journey as a UD grad to now, the lessons he has learned along the way, and her experiences in corporate Communication! All 39 attendees were in for a treat.

FALL 2020 SEMESTER

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY #5

We had our final general meeting of the Fall 2020 semester on Monday, November 30th with our amazing guest speaker, Samantha Antopol. Samantha does Brand Communication and Events at Veuve Clicquot!  Samantha taught us everything from his career journey as a UD grad to now, the lessons she has learned along the way, her experiences at Vogue and Veuve Clicquot, and how taking a break to travel impacted her life! All 63 attendees were in for a treat.

The whole board would like to wish you all good luck on finals, and we hope that you all have a great winter break. We had our fourth general meeting on Monday, November 16th with our amazing guest speaker, Andrew Frischman. Andrew is the Executive Director of Enterprise Innovation at Conde Nast!  Andrew taught us everything from his career journey as a UD grad in 2011 to now, the lessons he has learned, and the concept of digital transformation in PR! This was great for all 52 attendees to learn from.

Our last general meeting of the semester is next Monday Nov. 30th at 5pm, with Samatha Antopol, who does Brand Communications and Events at Veuve Cliquot! Don’t forget, this opportunity is open to everyone to attend!

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY #3

We had a great meeting on Monday, October 19th with Mallory Metzner, a producer and journalist at WRDE Coast TV. Ms. Metzner spoke to us about pitching and the overlap between PR and Journalism. Thank you to all of the 56 participants who attended the meeting! 

Remember we will be having a Netflix viewing party of the new highly rated documentary, The Social Dillemma, on Wednesday at 4pm. After, we will be having a zoom discussion on our thoughts and comments! This is open to everyone, and will be a great study break and a chance to make more connections! We have our skill slam coming up on November 2nd at 5pm where our VP of Professional Development, Mackenzie, will be taking us through press release basics. Our next general meeting will be on Monday, November 16 @ 5 PM with Andrew Frischman, Executive Director for Product Strategy and Development at Conde Nast.

We had a great meeting on Monday, October 5th with Raoul Davis, a Partner of Ascendant Group PR. Mr. Davis spoke to us about rebranding through his experience with CEO representation, and advice on how to be successful in the industry through his own personal experiences.

We have lots of exciting upcoming events:

  • This Thursday, October 8th at 5:30PM, we will be holding a panel with our former executive board where we will be talking about how they navigated their job search through COVID-19. Submit any questions for the Q&A to Becky at rebkaz@udel.edu, and the Zoom details can be found on our general meeting slides.
  • On Thursday, October 21st from 4-6pm, we will be viewing Netflix’s documentary The Social Dilemma and having a discussion afterwards! Find a brief descrition of the documentary and Zoom link details in the general meeting slides!
  • Our next general meeting will be Monday October 19th at 5 PM with Mallory Metzner, a multimedia journalist and producer at WRDE NBC Coast TV! 

SKILL SLAM EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 9.22.20

We had a skill slam on Monday, September 21st where our Vice President of Professional Development, Mackenzie taught us all about WordPress! She taught us about the importance of it, how to create one, and what to include to attract future employers!

We had a great meeting on Monday, September 14th with Grace Leong! Grace is the CEO of HUNTER, and a former UD alum of the year. She spoke to us about how COVID-19 and Black Lives Matter have changed public relations, and she also spoke about how to get a job in PR after college. 

Thank you to all of the 81 participants who attended today who were lucky enough to be inspired and motivated by Grace!
